Guada, a talented tattoo artist from Spain, is making her mark in the tattoo world with a diverse range of styles and a passion for her craft. Working out of Cádiz, she draws inspiration from modern trends while staying true to her artistic roots. In this interview, she shares insights into her journey, from her first tattoo to her plans for the future.
Where are you from? Where do you currently work and take appointments?
- I am from Spain and currently work at a tattoo studio in Cádiz named Tekken Tattoo. I take appointments through my website and social media.
For you, is tattooing an art, a job, or something else?
- For me, tattooing goes beyond art; it becomes a way of life, occupying most of my time and shaping my daily experiences.
When did you first think about getting a tattoo, and how did that turn out?
- I first thought about getting a tattoo when I was 18 years old. My first tattoo was a small moon on my finger. It wasn't the best experience because I didn't know much about professional tattoo studios at the time. The result wasn't as perfect as I had hoped. However, this initial experience sparked my interest in the world of tattooing. Despite the flaws, it made me curious and motivated me to learn more about tattoo art, proper techniques, and the importance of choosing a skilled artist. This first step, though imperfect, set me on the path to becoming deeply passionate about tattoos.
Did you have any teachers, or are you self-taught?
- I was fortunate to work for different tattoo studios in my city and have met some talented artists there, but I am also largely self-taught. I spend a lot of time perfecting my technique and learning new styles on my own.
What is the most important thing in tattooing for you?
- Client satisfaction and the quality of the work are the most important things for me. I want each person to feel happy and comfortable with their tattoo. It's the perfect formula for gaining loyal clients.
Your portfolio reflects modern tattoo trends: anime, neo-tribal, graphic, realism. Tell us why you chose these styles.
- I am drawn to these styles because they offer a wide range of expression. Anime allows me to develop my creativity using different resources, while other styles like neo-tribal let me experiment with anatomical shapes.
Which tattoo style excites you the most?
- It depends on the era, but lately, I have been enjoying creating large neo-tribal pieces and small works with metallic effects.
There are many discussions among tattoo artists about neo-tribal. As a specialist working in this style, tell us about it.
- The neo-tribal style is a modern evolution of traditional tribal tattoos. Although some may see it as a fleeting trend, it remains relevant. Fashion tends to return with fresh twists, and classic tribal tattoos have come back with a new edge as neo-tribal. Tattoos reflect the era we live in, and in my opinion, this style particularly captures the tattoo boom and the exchange of ideas among artists that it has sparked.
How are your projects born? Do you work more often on the client's idea or your own?
- My projects usually come from a collaboration between the client and me. I like to hear their ideas and then add my personal touch to create a unique and meaningful design.
In addition to tattooing, you also work on embedding precious stones in teeth. Tell us how you came to this work and what attracts you to it.
- I became interested in tooth gems as an extension of my interest in body art after discovering this trend in the USA. I am attracted to the idea of adding a touch of sparkle and luxury to someone's smile, and it is a fun and creative way to explore new forms of art.
What about conventions? Share your experience.
- I've attended several tattoo conventions with the studio I worked for, and this year will be my first convention as a resident tattoo artist, and I can’t wait for it!
Do you travel a lot outside of Spain? Where do you like the most? And where are you planning to go next?
- Yes, I have traveled a lot! My next destinations will be Leipzig and Hannover, two cities in Germany.
Unusual projects or collaborations often happen in every tattoo artist's career. Have you had any such events in your career?
- Yes, I once collaborated with my coworker at Tekken Tattoo. We both tattooed the same person at the same time, but I'm looking forward to collaborating with a friend just for fun.
What is the main goal of your journey? Share your plans for the future.
- My main goal is to continue growing as an artist and eventually open my own studio. Currently, I’m planning to go to the U.S. to explore new frontiers in tattoo art and see what the world of tattooing has in store for me.
