Meet Carlos Zambrano, known in the tattoo world as Chaz, a talented realist artist originally from Venezuela. With 10 years of experience, he is currently focusing on black and gray realism, blending classical themes with modern tattoo techniques, which has garnered great appreciation from his clients in Spain.
Chaz began his career in 2014 in Barinas, Venezuela, inspired by tattoo shows like Ink Master, and with the support of his family, he acquired his first tattoo machines. His background in design and street graffiti has played a significant role in shaping his artistic style.
Known for his love of realism, Chaz views it as a reflection of reality captured on the skin. While realism is central to his work, his interest in surrealism has also influenced his artistic evolution. After several years of experimenting with neo-traditional styles, Chaz shifted his focus to black and gray realism upon moving to Spain, which resonated with his European clientele. He sees this technique as a nostalgic way to express emotion, comparing it to listening to a beloved classic song. His works go beyond mere designs; they are deeply emotional pieces that evoke strong feelings in viewers.
“For me, my favorite and most important client will always be my mother, who was the one who supported me from the beginning, and took the courage to get a tattoo at 63 years old,” - Chaz shared with us.
Chaz's talent and exceptional technique have been recognized at international tattoo conventions. One of his standout victories occurred in 2022 in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, where he won first place for the best black and gray tattoo and also took home the award for the best tattoo of the day.
“I have a very interesting anecdote about a convention in which I participated in 2022 in the city of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. It turns out that on the last day of the convention, I asked my Lienzo to go directly to the jury, while my friend and I parked the car. It turned out that my friend called me to inform me that we won first place in the realism and black and gray category. From the excitement, running out to receive the award and everyone waiting for me… and to my surprise, after a while I took home the award for the best tattoo of the day,” - Chaz recounted.
Chaz has been fortunate to work in various parts of the world, including Colombia, Spain, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. Currently, he is based at Kremlin Tattoo Studio in Ourense, Spain, where he continues to hone his craft, working with clients from all over the world.
