Saskia Patrice, a tattoo artist based in Zurich and co-owner of Line Studio, has been making waves in the tattoo industry with her minimalist and fine-line approach to tattooing. With a background in art history, particularly her studies in Symbolism, she incorporates elements that challenge the traditional boundaries of art and tattooing.
Her journey into the world of tattooing started with a leap of faith after years of dissatisfaction with corporate fashion jobs in Amsterdam. “There was this itch—I wasn’t getting the hands-on, physical expression I craved,” she recalls. It was through illustrating designs for her friends that she realized tattooing could be her path. Moving to Switzerland, she embraced the challenge and persistence it took to break into the industry, knocking on doors for a year before landing her first opportunity.
Saskia’s tattoo style reflects her passion for pushing artistic boundaries. Drawing inspiration from Symbolism and surrealism, she takes familiar motifs—animals like snakes, dragons, and tigers—and adds a contemporary, almost surreal twist. “Why not tattoo neotribal patterns on a snake or throw hearts on a tiger? You’ll recognize what it is, but it becomes far more interesting when it breaks the rules,” she explains, referencing her love for transforming reality in the way that René Magritte did in his famous painting, “The Treachery of Images”.
One of the hallmarks of Saskia’s work is her fine-line technique, which she mastered early in her career using a single needle. Despite the challenges, she has consistently pushed herself to keep her work fresh. “I started with fine lines, and it quickly became second nature. I always try to switch things up and explore new techniques while maintaining that clean, sharp stroke,” she says.
As a co-owner of Line Studio, Saskia has embraced both the freedom and challenges of being an independent artist. Running her own studio allows her to manage her schedule and curate her creative projects, but the path is not without hurdles. “The hustle can be intense; I often battle productivity guilt,” she admits. Still, she sees the tattoo industry evolving in ways that support more independence and creative freedom, thanks in part to the rise of social media and greater inclusivity.
Saskia’s international experience has also been a significant influence on her artistic growth. “Each place brings its own flavor,” she notes, highlighting how traveling and meeting artists from different cultures has enriched her own practice.
Looking ahead, Saskia is excited to explore new mediums and techniques. “I’m eager to branch out into tattooing on leather and engraving,” she shares, as she continues to push the boundaries of her artistry. For young tattoo artists aspiring to follow in her footsteps, Saskia offers simple but powerful advice: “Stay motivated, no matter the obstacles. If you fuel your passion, incredible opportunities await.”
