The artist, which will be hero of today's publication, lives and works in Gdynia (Poland).
Please meet - Marcin Pawlus - a tattoo artist and the founder of the DWA ŚLEDZIE tattoo studio, which in translation from Polish means "Two Herrings". This name is due to the fact that these fishes are depicted on the state emblem of Gdynia.
Poland's tattoo scene has flourished significantly over the past decade, with cities like Gdynia becoming important hubs for artistic tattooing. The coastal location of Gdynia has particularly influenced the local tattoo culture, where maritime themes naturally blend with traditional Polish artistic heritage. This unique environment has shaped many talented artists, with tattoo artists from across Europe recognizing the distinctive style emerging from this region.
## Style and TechniqueMarcin's favorite task is full-scale thematic hybrids with interlacing the themes of the Middle Ages and marine. Preferring to work in black and grey, he pays maximum attention to the smallest details of the work, working out each line, each shade. He draws inspiration for his tattoos from the images of medieval art and Japanese woodcut engravings. Several techniques of tattooing are intertwined in his works: traditional and graphic tattoo, dotwork, elements of tattoo-realism and many others.
The fusion of medieval iconography with maritime elements creates a distinctive artistic signature that sets Marcin apart in the contemporary tattoo landscape. His approach to black and grey work demonstrates masterful understanding of contrast and depth, utilizing negative space and intricate linework to achieve remarkable visual impact. The incorporation of dotwork elements adds texture and dimension to his pieces, while his background in traditional techniques ensures solid foundation in classic tattoo principles. This multi-technique approach requires extensive knowledge of needle configurations, ink saturation levels, and healing considerations, making proper tattoo aftercare essential for preserving the intricate details of his work.
## Notable WorksThese distinctive features and the total dedication to the art of tattooing, brought him many awards at international and Polish tattoo conventions and festivals, publications in world famous tattoo magazines and the seat of a jury member at the festival in Gdansk (Poland).
The works shown in the gallery above exemplify Marcin's signature approach to combining medieval and maritime themes through sophisticated black and grey techniques. His portfolio demonstrates exceptional versatility, showcasing everything from large-scale compositions that incorporate multiple artistic influences to detailed studies that highlight his precision with fine linework and shading gradients. These pieces represent the evolution of contemporary European tattooing, where traditional craftsmanship meets innovative artistic vision, establishing new standards for stylistic excellence in modern tattoo art.
As Marcin says:
«In my opinion my biggest achievement is being independent, do what I really love and to have good and interesting people around me in my life. For me there is no such a thing like a "free time" if you really work with a passion. I love to travel, after work I usually draw or paint, read. I always try to find and see something inspiring and new – it's good for me, for my brain, so finally it's good for my work also. And I'm inspired by my wife and our two black cats. Always!»
Recognition from the international tattoo community, including his position as a jury member at prestigious conventions, speaks to the high regard in which his work is held among peers and collectors alike. His achievements reflect not only technical mastery but also the ability to create emotionally resonant pieces that connect with clients on a deeper level. This combination of artistic excellence and professional recognition has established him among the top-ranked tattoo artists in Central Europe.
