London painter Chris Guest is one of young artists, laying new trails between the popular directions of the past and innovative breathing of modern art.
Having an understanding of art history, as well as personal tattoo experience, Chris has developed a style that resonates with both classical and contemporary art, expanding our understanding of visual beauty, and bringing the viewer back to images somewhat resembling a beloved pin-up. In the spirit of this trend, his work also draws a fine line between slovenliness and sexuality, challenge and play, as did their print predecessors in the 1940s and 1950s.
Chris's paintings combine a realistic portraits with some expressive abstraction that fills the background, thus giving the work a truly attractive, modern look.
In the interview of The Inked Magazine Chris told about the beginning of this creative path:
"I was always drawing and doing creative stuff as a kid, so I guess it’s just an extension of that really. I studied art at University, but then drifted out of it. My skills really developed when I started attending London Fine Arts in Battersea, as they actually teach you how to draw and paint, using classic techniques. It’s a very inspiring place, to surround yourself with others who are obsessed with painting and drawing. Then about 10 years ago, I bought a house with my girlfriend, and she asked me to paint something for the new living room. I copied this red abstract painting she found online somewhere and after making that painting I was hooked. I realised there was no turning back after that."
