Don’t miss out on the area’s only annual tattoo convention and all the area has to offer!
The History
Salem, Virginia, is nestled in the beautiful blue ridge mountains with the small town feel of old Main Street USA. It is part of Roanoke County and is a stone’s throw from Roanoke City. Tattooing has a rich history dating back to Cap Coleman, pictured in his Virginia shop circa 1918. In the Roanoke area, the epic Time Machine was created in 1995 by tattoo machine builder and artist Danny Fowler of ancient art.
This rich tattoo history is coupled with the region’s darker history of being nicknamed the “moonshine capital of the world.” This was brought to light by Hollywood in the epic movie LAWLESS, starring Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf. This famous county is the neighboring county to Roanoke County. You can visit some distilleries and soak up that part of America to this day. The Appalachian Trail cuts through the area, and there are several amazing views to hike and even one spectacular one for veterans to view: the Audie Murphy Memorial, where the most decorated soldier of World War II tragically died in a plane crash on May 28, 1971.
