What does a compass tattoo mean?
A compass tattoo stands for direction, commitment to your goals, protection and luck. The first compass prototypes appeared in China in the 11th century, and the instrument later became essential for navigating open water. Sailors believed a compass tattoo would guard them from storms, bring them home safely and give them luck at sea. Over time the design moved beyond maritime themes to mean finding your own path, both literally and figuratively. The Icelandic Vegvísir, a so-called runic compass often linked to the Vikings, was believed to keep travelers from losing their way even in the harshest conditions. A wind rose adds balance and harmony, a map, mountains or ocean strengthen the sense of adventure, and coordinates or dates tie the design to specific places and people. Realistic and old-school nautical versions often add anchors or chains.
