What does a spider tattoo mean?
The spider web is one of the most debated images in tattoo culture, and its meaning depends on who wears it. In older traditions the web stood for fate, interconnection and the cycle of life: in Norse mythology the Norns weave the threads of destiny, and in Native American traditions the web-shaped dreamcatcher guards against negative energy. In the mid-to-late 20th century the web became tied to US prison culture, where it marked a long sentence and the feeling of being trapped in the system, often on the elbow or neck. Bikers, punks and goths later took it up as a sign of resilience, individuality and defiance. Today it can also mean obstacles overcome. Common styles include traditional, realism, fine-line minimalism, neo-traditional and 3D, with the elbow still the classic placement.
