On September 4, 2026, Osaka, Japan will once again host the Bay Gate Tattoo Festival — an event that has quickly become one of the key platforms for the new generation of tattoo artists in the country.
The festival continues to develop a format focused on emerging artists — those with up to seven years of professional experience. This approach creates a level playing field, shifting attention away from status and toward artistic growth, skill, and potential.
Bay Gate is a one-day event that brings together:
- live tattooing
- a competitive program
- international participants
- an open, non-hierarchical environment
The festival takes place in Osaka — a city with a strong local scene and deep ties to the tradition of Japanese tattooing.
Winners of the competition receive an invitation to the Tokyo Bay Tattoo Festival — the largest tattoo event in Japan, where the scene expands to a national and international level. In this way, Bay Gate serves as a gateway into a broader professional context.
The first edition of Bay Gate was held in Osaka in 2025 and immediately set the tone:
- 70 participating artists from across Japan
- around 300 emerging artists among the visitors
The concept behind the festival was created by IVOLY, a tattoo artist from Osaka and one of the notable figures in the contemporary Japanese tattoo scene.
His work extends beyond individual practice. IVOLY is actively building a system aimed at developing the industry through:
- supporting young artists
- creating new event formats
- contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage
For those interested in taking part in the festival, registration details, participation requirements, and ticket information are available on the official Instagram page: Bay Gate Tattoo Festival
