A new tattoo studio has opened in Northcliff, one of Johannesburg’s northern suburbs. Ikigai Tattoo Studio was founded by experienced South African tattoo artist Heath, who has been working in the industry since 2011 and has spent more than a decade tattooing and building studios across South Africa.

Ikigai Tattoo Studio was created as a calm, creative space where tattooing is approached not only as a final image on the skin, but as a thoughtful process — from the first consultation and design development to placement, technical execution, and long-term longevity of the work.

The studio takes its name from the Japanese concept of “ikigai,” often associated with purpose, meaning, and a thoughtful approach to one’s craft. This idea shaped the studio’s philosophy: attentive client care, quality craftsmanship, custom design, and a comfortable atmosphere.

“We wanted to create a studio where people feel comfortable from the moment they walk through the door,” says Heath, founder of Ikigai Tattoo Studio. “Getting tattooed can be a significant experience for people. The environment should reflect that.”

The studio focuses on custom projects developed specifically for each individual. Heath’s approach takes into account the body, placement, composition, longevity, and personal meaning behind the future tattoo. This is especially important for larger, multi-session projects, where the design needs to work naturally with the body and remain visually strong over time.

The atmosphere of Ikigai Tattoo Studio reflects this philosophy as well. Natural light, private appointments, a slower pace, and attention to detail allow clients to discuss ideas more openly, refine designs, and approach the tattooing process with greater confidence.

The studio welcomes a wide range of tattoo styles, with a particular focus on Japanese-inspired tattooing, black and grey work, blackwork, darker illustrative aesthetics, and large-scale custom projects.

Heath began tattooing in 2011 in Potchefstroom, where he opened one of the town’s first dedicated tattoo studios. Over time, he built a reputation as an artist focused on custom work, technical precision, and a thoughtful connection with each client.

Today, his work is strongly influenced by traditional Japanese tattooing — its composition, flow, storytelling, and ability to build an image in dialogue with the body. At the same time, his visual language still carries the influence of blackwork and darker illustrative styles that shaped his early years as an artist.

Beyond tattooing itself, Ikigai Tattoo Studio is also developing an educational direction through its website and social media channels. The studio shares practical information on tattoo preparation, consultations, aftercare, and the factors that affect how tattoos age over time.

Ikigai Tattoo Studio serves clients from across Johannesburg, including Northcliff, Randburg, Sandton, Fourways, Roodepoort, and surrounding areas. The studio’s goal is to create tattoos built on thoughtful design, quality execution, and genuine trust between artist and client.Ikigai Tattoo Studio: A Calmer Approach to Tattooing in Johannesburg
