Yuliia Zahnybida specializes in fine line and black-and-grey realism. Her work is distinguished by soft gradients, precise detail, and controlled pigment application. She continues to develop her technique while participating in international conventions and contributing to the evolution of modern tattooing.
Yuliia Zahnybida has emerged as a distinctive voice in contemporary tattooing through the development of the JZ Optima Needle Technique-an approach that adapts ultra-fine PMU needles for high-precision tattoo work. Her method allows for smoother gradients, reduced skin trauma, and a level of detail that exceeds conventional tattoo techniques. Industry professionals have noted that her approach represents a meaningful technical advancement, particularly within fine line and black-and-grey realism.
Zahnybida's work has earned international recognition. She was awarded 1st place (Fresh Fine Line) at the All Stars International Tattoo Convention in Miami (2024), 1st place (Fine Line Healed) and 2nd place (Fine Line Fresh) at the Orlando Tattoo Show (2025). She has also been invited to serve as a judge at Villain Arts Tattoo Festival Orlando (2025) and Orlando Tattoo Show (2025), reflecting a high level of professional trust and authority. Her work has been featured in Global Tattoo Magazine, Steelo Magazine, Tattoo Life, and Top Tattoo Artist of the World.
Having worked across Ukraine, Germany, Belgium, and Canada, Zahnybida continues to expand her influence internationally. Her technique has begun influencing how artists approach fine line tattooing, particularly in achieving softer gradients and improved healing outcomes. As she continues to refine her method and share her expertise, Zahnybida is positioned among a new generation of artists shaping the future of tattooing.
A technique born from two worlds
Most tattoo artists spend their careers refining their skill within the tools and conventions of the industry as they know it. Yulia Zahnybida took a different path. The Ukrainian-born, Orlando-based artist has developed what she calls the JZ Optima Needle Technique -a method that adapts ultra-fine needles originally engineered for Permanent Makeup procedures for use in artistic tattooing. The result is fine line and black-and-grey realism work executed with a degree of precision and tonal subtlety that pushes the boundaries of what most artists consider achievable on skin.
How It Works
PMU needles have a significantly smaller diameter than standard tattoo needles. In conventional tattooing, needle selection is dictated by the style being executed-larger groupings for color saturation, smaller configurations for finer lines. Even the finest standard tattoo needles, however, have physical limitations when it comes to rendering the kind of subtle gradients and micro-detail that define high-end realism work.
Zahnybida recognized that PMU needles offered capabilities that existing tattoo equipment could not match. By adapting these tools for body work, she developed an approach where pigment is deposited more gradually, in thinner layers, with less mechanical disruption to the surrounding tissue. The practical effect is work with remarkably smooth tonal transitions-shading built through multiple soft passes rather than heavy saturation, creating gradient effects that resemble pencil or charcoal rendering on paper.
Less Trauma, Cleaner Healing
Beyond the visual quality, there is a functional advantage. Because the needles are smaller and pigment placement is more controlled, the process causes less mechanical trauma to the skin. The surrounding tissue experiences less irritation during the session, which translates to smoother healing and, critically, cleaner healed results.
This matters particularly in fine line and realism work, where the integrity of healed lines and the retention of subtle tonal differences determine how a tattoo holds up over time. Aggressive needle work can cause scarring or blowouts that compromise delicate designs. Zahnybida's technique minimizes those risks by working more gently and building detail incrementally.
Cross-Industry Innovation
What makes the JZ Optima Needle Technique particularly noteworthy is that it represents a deliberate cross-pollination between two related but largely separate professional fields. Permanent Makeup and tattooing share foundational principles-both involve depositing pigment under the skin-but they have historically developed their own tools, techniques, and professional communities with relatively little overlap.
Zahnybida saw a connection that others had not acted on: that tools engineered for the precision demands of cosmetic work on the face could be repurposed to expand what is possible in artistic tattooing on the body. Her approach demonstrates how techniques from adjacent industries can open up new creative possibilities when an artist is willing to experiment outside established conventions.
Recognition and Industry Standing
Zahnybida's work has earned recognition well beyond her Orlando client base. She has been featured in Global Tattoo Magazine and has participated in major conventions on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Orlando Tattoo Show and the All Stars International Tattoo Convention. She has received competition awards and, notably, has been invited to serve as a judge at tattoo competitions— a role that in the tattoo industry signals a high level of professional respect and technical authority among peers.
A Portfolio Built on Custom Work
Zahnybida's body of work ranges across portraiture, animal subjects, and figurative compositions, all grounded in the black-and-grey realism tradition but executed with a lightness and refinement that feels distinctly her own. Each piece is designed individually for the client as a unique artistic commission rather than adapted from flash sheets or template designs.
