Oleksandr Rudenko is a tattoo artist originally from Ukraine, currently based in Lörrach, Germany. His work is rooted in black and grey realism — portraits, animals, dark narrative compositions, and large-scale projects built through soft shadows, smooth transitions, and precise control of contrast.

For Oleksandr, tattooing has always been connected to visual art. Since childhood, he was interested in drawing, composition, and realistic imagery, and over time this interest naturally developed into a profession. His approach is shaped by a broader artistic background: photography, anatomy, light, texture, and the visual structure of an image all play an important role in the way he creates tattoos.

“Tattooing became much more than just a profession for me — it became a way to express emotions, stories, and personality through realism and detail,” he says.

Today, Oleksandr works in Lörrach, a German city located close to Switzerland and France. This position gives him the opportunity to work with clients from different countries and remain connected to an international professional environment. According to the artist, Germany became an important stage in his career, helping him raise his standards in work, communication, organization, and long-term artistic development. At the same time, his Ukrainian roots remain part of his creative identity and artistic mindset.

Oleksandr’s main direction is black and grey realism. He was drawn to this style for its emotional depth, timeless visual language, and the ability to create expressive images without color — through tone, light, shadow, and detail. His tattoos avoid excessive harshness: even with strong contrast, they retain softness and sit naturally on the body.

“For me, black and grey realism allows tattoos to feel more alive, emotional, and artistic,” he explains.

His style can be described as detailed black and grey realism with a strong focus on smooth transitions, atmosphere, and composition. Oleksandr pays particular attention to how a tattoo interacts with the body. For him, an image should not exist separately from anatomy; it should work with the form, movement, and natural structure of the skin.

Among his favorite subjects are portraits, animals, dark themes, and cinematic compositions. These motifs give him space for both technical precision and emotional expression. A portrait can preserve memory, inspiration, or personal meaning, while an animal often becomes a symbol of character, strength, freedom, or an inner state.

Oleksandr pays special attention to eyes, skin texture, fur, light, and depth. For him, realism is about more than accurately copying a reference — it is about creating a piece that feels present and emotionally convincing.

“I want people to feel something when they see my work — not only notice the technique,” says the artist.

Custom projects usually begin with a conversation. Oleksandr discusses the client’s idea, references, personal meaning, and placement on the body. From there, he builds the composition so that it feels organic and visually balanced. Most of the time, he does not copy a single image; instead, he combines several references, adapting light, contrast, texture, and placement for each individual client.

This approach allows him to create tattoos that feel personal rather than generic. References are a starting point, but the final piece must have its own composition, mood, and character.

Throughout his career, Oleksandr has participated in tattoo conventions and presented his work to an international audience. Among his important achievements are awards at the Freiburg Tattoo Convention, including Best of Show and 2nd Place, as well as recognition for a realism project at the Kharkiv Tattoo Convention.

For him, conventions are valuable not only as competitions, but also as spaces for professional exchange, growth, and connection with artists from different countries.

Oleksandr is also part of the ProTeam of Biotatum Pro and Ink Essence. He sees this collaboration as professional recognition and a sign of trust from brands within the tattoo industry. For him, such projects matter not only because of status, but also because they allow him to be part of a wider international professional community.

Looking ahead, Oleksandr plans to continue participating in conventions, expanding guest spot opportunities, building international collaborations, and working on larger and more complex realism projects. He continues to develop his own artistic style and strengthen his international presence through publications, collaborations, and professional work within the tattoo industry.

“My main goal for the future is to continue growing internationally as a tattoo artist, participate in more conventions, expand guest spot opportunities, and collaborate with artists and studios from different countries,” says Oleksandr.

In his work, black and grey realism becomes a language for speaking about memory, character, inner strength, and visual drama.Oleksandr Rudenko builds his tattoos through detail, but the main focus remains the impression — the feeling that stays after the first look.
