Frederik Heil is a Hamburg-based tattoo artist whose name has become closely associated with one of the most technically demanding areas in tattooing — the palms. His work stands out through bold compositions, a balanced use of black and color, and a clear focus on how tattoos age over time.

Today, he is based at his own studio, Dream Machine Tattoos in Hamburg — a space that reflects both his professional journey and his approach to tattooing.

“Tattooing allows me to stay quite mobile… I travel a lot and work in different places through guest spots,” he says.

Among the places he frequently returns to is Barcelona, where he works with the team at Black Ship Tattoo.

Frederik began his career as a tattoo artist in 2019. His path into tattooing developed naturally through drawing and being surrounded by people already involved in the tattoo world.

“At some point I realized that tattooing combines many things I enjoy: craftsmanship, creativity, and working closely with people,” he recalls.

His early years were focused on hands-on experience — learning technique, understanding skin, and gradually building his own approach without rushing the process.

Frederik started tattooing palms in 2022. What began almost by accident quickly turned into a defining part of his work.

“Palm tattoos actually came into my work almost by accident… I became fascinated by the technical challenge.”

The skin on the palms requires a completely different level of control and understanding. It regenerates quickly, is constantly in use, and leaves little room for technical error.

“The skin on the palms is very different, so it really requires skill, precision, and a good understanding of your machines and technique.”

Instead of avoiding this challenge, Frederik embraced it — turning complexity into a core element of his practice.

Frederik describes his work as "bold and lasting". His visual language is rooted in strong shapes and clear compositions, influenced by neo-traditional and ornamental approaches.

“I’m interested in strong shapes and designs that age well over time.”

By combining color with black, he creates contrast that remains readable and impactful over the years. His focus is not only on how a tattoo looks when it’s fresh, but how it evolves with the body.

Frederik is a vegan, and this choice directly influences his professional practice. In his work, he uses vegan, plant-based pigments, reflecting his intention to minimize harm to the environment.

“For me those values are mainly about awareness and respect — for people, animals, and the environment,” he explains.

This mindset extends beyond materials — it shapes the way he interacts with clients, approaching each tattoo with care, respect, and attention.

Symbolism plays an important role in many of Frederik’s projects. Tattoos often begin with a personal idea or story, which then needs to be translated into a visual form.

“A lot of clients come with a specific meaning or idea they want to express,” he says.

The process becomes a dialogue — discussing intention, context, and meaning. His sources of inspiration remain broad:

“Nature is definitely a big source of inspiration… also symbolism, spiritual ideas, and traditional imagery.”

Frederik does not follow a rigid creative system. Some designs are prepared in advance, while others evolve directly on the body.

“Tattooing is a very direct and physical process, so some decisions feel more natural in the moment.”

This flexibility allows him to respond to placement, movement, and the individual characteristics of the skin — making each piece more precise and personal.

Travel continues to play a key role in Frederik’s life and practice. It shapes both his creative perspective and his connection with people. He has built strong connections with certain cities and studios over time, creating a network that feels both professional and personal.

Looking ahead, his direction remains clear: “Keep traveling, keep connecting with people, and continue growing both as a person and as an artist.”

For Frederik, tattooing is an ongoing process — one that is defined by movement, awareness, and a continuous search for balance between craft and life.
